Basketball Report: Warren Easton boys, girls sweep Karr

It is one of the best rivalries in the New Orleans area in all sports.

The rivalry edge went to Warren Easton on Monday.

The Eagles downed Karr in boys and girls action with the boys winning 49-45 and the girls winning 52-32 in the Martin Luther King Day Classic at the Xavier Convocation Center in District 9-4A action.

In the boys game, the Eagles (15-9, 1-0) jumped out to an 18-10 lead after one quarter and led 27-17 at halftime. The Cougars (12-11, 0-1) rallied with a big third quarter, outscoring Easton 22-11 to take a 39-38 lead going to the final quarter. The Eagles came back in the fourth quarter to take the win in a very competitive contest. Lance Madison scored late to put Easton ahead to stay. Jylon Morris-Newton scored 12 points while Vernon Simms had 11 to lead the Eagles. The loss was the fourth straight for Karr.

Warren Easton (13-8, 2-0) dominated the girls game, jumping all over Karr (9-10, 1-1) early for a 20-1 lead after one quarter and the Eagles were never threatened. They led 26-4 at halftime and it was 39-16 after three quarters. It was the fifth straight win for Easton. Keanna Anderson led the Eagles with 14 points while Briana Sutton had 12 for Warren Easton.

The two rivals will square off again in boys and girls action on Jan. 30 at Warren Easton. The Eagle boys will travel to McDonogh 35 Wednesday at 6 p.m. while Karr will host De La Salle tonight at 7 p.m.

In girls action, Easton will host McMain Friday at 6 p.m. in a 9-4A contest while Karr plays at St. Mary’s Academy Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a non-district contest.
