John EmeryThe door is once again open for five-star Destrehan running back John Emery.

Emery announced his de-commitment from the University of Georgia Thursday, 12 days after a reported visit with LSU coach Ed Orgeron following the Tigers’ victory over the then-No. 2 Bulldogs and two days after Orgeron, without naming Emery, called him “the best running back in America.”

The 6-foot, 194-pound Emery is the second-rated running back nationally in the 24/7 Sports composite ranking, which also ranks him as the No. 3 overall prospect in Louisiana and the No. 22 prospect in the nation. Rivals has Emery as the No. 3 back nationally.

While Orgeron cannot directly comment on prospects, there was no doubt who he was discussing Tuesday at the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation Quarterback Club presented by Home Bank at Rock ‘n’ Bowl.

Responding to a question on the emphasis to fill out his 2019 recruiting class, Orgeron said, “The best running back in America should come to LSU. We have our target on one. He’s not far from here.”

Emery and Orgeron reportedly visited outside Tiger Stadium following LSU’s 36-16 victory over Georgia on Oct. 13.

Emery had committed to Georgia in late July.
