Reports: David Griffin, Anthony Davis meet Wednesday in Los Angeles

The New Orleans Pelicans must determine the future of Anthony Davis before their next steps in the offseason.

Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic first reported Wednesday news of a meeting between Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin and Davis in Los Angeles to discuss whether the two sides will have a future together in New Orleans.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported later in the day that the meeting took place and the sides will “continue a dialogue” as Griffin continues to work on convincing Davis to re-commit to the Pelicans long term.

Charania added that it is “unlikely” Davis will change his mind about leaving.

While New Orleans Pelicans executive Vice President David Griffin and All-Star Anthony Davis‘ agent Rich Paul will continue discussions, it’s highly unlikely Davis‘ stance changes on trade, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.

Davis requested a trade on January 28 through his agent Rich Paul of Clutch Sports. Since then, the Pelicans have made dramatic changes to their front office headlined by the hire of Griffin and surprisingly won the NBA lottery to secure the right to draft consensus No. 1 pick Zion Williamson.

Options for Davis include opting into another year on his current contract with New Orleans to add on top of the one year currently remaining. He could also accept the NBA’s so-called supermax contract from the Pelicans. However, he is most likely to stand by his previous desired to be trades, giving Griffin a chance to reshape the Pels roster with a mix of veterans and draft picks from a list of likely suitors including the Boston Celtics, L.A. Lakers and New York Knicks.
