A day after the Saints signed free-agent wide receiver Dez Bryant, ESPN first reported wide receiver Cameron Meredith is headed for injured reserve and will have knee surgery.

Meredith signed with the Saints as a restricted free agent to a two-year, $9.5 million contract. The Chicago Bears could have retained him but decided not to match the offer as Meredith was working his way back from a knee injury that kept him sidelined throughout the 2017 season.

I’m not going to get into the details, but it’s not bad news. He’s going to have a full recovery,” Saints head coach Sean Payton said Thursday. “It’s a scope that he’s having some cleanup work done. He kept having the swelling week in and week out and he really was pushing through it. Within the next few days I think we’ll have that done.”

Meredith had nine catches for 114 yards with one touchdown this season.
