LAFAYETTE – Joey Kirkland of West Monroe had five birdies for the day Tuesday, and the last one was the biggest.

Kirkland rolled in a sliding 12-foot right-to-left putt on the final green for a birdie on the par-four 18th hole at The Wetlands, snapping a tie and giving him the boys’ Division I individual title at the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA State Golf Championships.

Kirkland, who tied four fourth in last year’s Division I meet, was one stroke behind C. E. Byrd’s Charlie Flynn with three holes remaining before he birdied the 128-yard par-three 16th hole to forge a tie. After both parred the par-four 17th, Kirkland put his approach shot within 12 feet and made the clinching putt for a two-day 139 total (70-69).

His three-under 69 on Tuesday was the low round of the day, after he entered Tuesday tied with Flynn at two-under 70 from Monday’s first round. Flynn had three birdies and one bogey on his Tuesday card to finish at 70-70—140.

Flynn’s C. E. Byrd team claimed the team title in a runaway, adding to its 12-stroke lead entering the final round with a team 290 score on Tuesday over the 6,348-yard par-72 Wetlands layout. Byrd, which had won three straight state titles before Jesuit claimed last year’s Division I crown, finished at 13-over 577 as a team, well ahead of Jesuit’s runner-up 602 total.

Alexandria finished third at 608 and Kirkland’s West Monroe team finished fourth at 611. Catholic-Baton Rouge, last year’s runners-up, was fifth at 615.

Kirkland birdied two holes and bogeyed two on the front side while Flynn turned in two-under 34 to take a two-stroke lead. Kirkland was still one stroke back when he and Flynn both birdied the par-five 14th hole before Kirkland birdied two of his final three.

Byrd had three players finish in the individual top five, with Jake Marler finishing third (72-70—142) and Payne Johnson finishing fourth (71-75—146). Chance Queen of Alexandria , who stood in third place one stroke behind Kirkland and Flynn entering the final round, finished fourth at 71-74—145.
